UNIVERSITY TRACK MEN HAVE TRYOUT AT FRANKLIN GAMES

At the City of Boston Games held at Franklin Field yesterday the University track team made a very creditable showing for the first meet of the season. The meet was an open one and many track stars were present, several of whom represented the United States in the Olympic games at Antwerp.

In the 100-yard dash, R. Howard '23 received the bronze medal for third place. The track was very slow and the winning time was 10.2 seconds. In the mile event, H. A. Fox '22 finished in third place from a large field with W. C. Bennett '23 following closely on his heels. The event was won by E. F. Hannan of the B. A. A. with the time of 4 minutes 35 seconds.

B. A. A. Man Wins Half Mile

The half mile run was won by Mahoney of the B. A. A. in 2 minutes 4 seconds. Fifth place was taken by A. H. Gordon '23, who was followed immediately by Piehl, J. Quinn '23 and Schearner.

The five mile race was one of the most interesting of the day. There were at least 20 entrants, among whom were many marathon stars. The race was won by F. Fowler of the B. A. A. with a time of 27 minutes. Fowler is the national 5 and 10-mile champion and was a member of the Olympic team. He ran a very pretty race against a stiff handicap. Captain Bemis of the cross-country team won third place, with Raycroft and H. C. Pratt '23 in fourth and fifth places respectively. The University men ran sterling races and except for the two well-known stars who finished first and second, far outclassed their rivals.

Stage Triangular Relay

A triangular relay race was run between Boston College, Boston Y. M. C. A. and Harvard. Boston College won this event by about 20 yards from the University team, with the Y. M. C. A. trailing a bad third. The time was 3 minutes 32.4 seconds.

The University was represented by Gourdin, Doherty, Captain O'Connell and McCarty, who ran in that order. Gourdin won the first lap by about two yards, but Doherty lost 10 in the next round. O'Connell held his own on the next lap but Driscoll added 10 more yards to the B. A. A. team's lead in the last lap.

Gourdin easily won first place from scratch position in the broad-jump. His distance was 22 feet 8 1-2 inches. In the high-jump H. R. Davis '23, the only representative of the University in this event, reached the height of 5 feet 7 inches. With a handicap of five inches he missed third place by a half inch. First place was won by Flahive of the B. A. A. with 5 feet 9 inches plus a handicap of three inches.
