In spite of being pitted against a faster, surer team, the Freshman hockey players won from Dartmouth 1923 by a 2 to 1 score on the Charlesbank rinks Saturday afternoon. Both teams showed good individual playing, but team work on both sides was noticeably lacking. The playing of G. Owen and J. G. Flint kept Dartmouth from scoring several times, while for the Green team Smith and Wanamaker starred, both being fast skaters and clever shooters. G. Owen acted as captain of the Freshman team.
Nearly 200 people attended the game, which was a very good representation considering the poor weather conditions.
A. H. Ladd netted both goals for the yearlings and was the strongest of the Crimson's rather weak forward line. Flint's consistent blocking at goal and the brilliant offensive and defensive play of Owen warded off many Dartmouth attacks. Smith made the Hanover players' only score, and Wanamaker, at left centre, was the Green's ablest skater and shooter.
Freshmen Score First.
The first score was made by Ladd after seven minutes of hard play. He netted the puck by a hard drive from in front of the goal, which struck the goal-tender's hand and slipped into the net. During the remainder of this half neither team had a great advantage, although the Green forwards threatened the University goal repeatedly, only to be stopped by the defense or clever blocks by Flint.
Ladd scored again soon after the opening of the second half by a difficult shot from the side of the rink. Dartmouth braced after that goal and held the Freshman team in its own territory. Smith scored for the visitors just before the close of the game after a sharp scrimmage in front of the Freshmen's goal.
The summary: Score--Harvard 1923, 2; Dartmouth 1923, 1. Goals--Ladd 2, Smith. Referees--Witherstein, Princeton. Time--15-minute halves.
