Dr. Maclaurin's untimely death comes as a great blow not only to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which must bear the brunt of it, but to educational institutions everywhere. Not yet fifty, he literally gave his life in the cause for which during the last eleven years, he had made such a gallant and successful fight. The great buildings on the Cambridge bank of the Charles are his monument, the rank of Tech as the greatest scientific school in the country, his creation.
Harvard men, who have watched these buildings rise almost next door to them, feel strongly the significance of Dr. Maclaurin's death. They wish he might have continued the inspiration which only men of his character can give. And with President Lowell, they wish to express to Technology their deep and profound sympathy in the loss she has sustained.
