1923 SKATERS DEFEAT MELROSE

FRESHMEN DISPLAY LITTLE TEAM WORK--G. OWEN PLAYS BRILLIANTLY.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In its first game of the season the Freshman hockey team easily defeated Melrose High at the Charlesbank rinks Saturday by a 4 to 1 score. Both sides lacked team play, and the goals for the yearlings were the result of individual playing and not of any concerted drives. The game was satisfactory, however, in that it showed that there is good material in the 1923 squad which, with practice, should develop into a fast team.

G. Owen was the outstanding player on the Crimson side. In addition to playing an excellent defensive game at point, he was also the most powerful offensive player, and twice eluded the Melrose defense to score goals. The first score came almost immediately on the opening of the game when J. C. Bancroft caged a long bounding shot from the side of the rink. A few minutes later J. Larocque brought in another tally when a rebound from the go, I tender's shins slipped into the net. No more counts were made during the first half, although Melrose's goal was menaced several times.

School Rallies in Second Half.

In the second half the High School players rallied, with the result that Hyatt scored in a long drive. Owen returned to the game after being put out by an injury in the first half, and unaided added two more tallies to the total.
