ELEVEN CRUSHES BATES IN ONE-SIDED CONTEST

In the first intercollegiate football game held in the Stadium since 1916, the University eleven smeared the victors over Bates College by the score of 53 to 0 Saturday afternoon. Although the Maine aggregation put up a game fight they could do nothing against the heavier, more experienced players of the Crimson team. Except for frequent fumbling the game was marked by few early-season blunders. E. L. Casey, Occ., started by his clever runs through a broken field, once for 45 yards and again for 65. W. J. Murray, Occ., by his field-generalship and rushing work, and R. Horween, Occ., by his line plunges were deciding factors in the game.

Bates won the toss and received Horween's kick-off on its 15 yard line. Harvard was penalized 5 yards for offside in the next play. Bates punted to Murray in midfield who ran the ball back 15 yards. An end play and an incompleted pass left the ball on the Bates 38 yard mark. Here R. Horween missed a kick for goal. The visitors had the ball on their 20 yard line but next play were penalized for being offside., E. D. Weather-head '22 then intercepted a pass and reached the Bates 5 yard line. R. Horween plunged over the line for the first touchdown of the season and kicked the goal.

Casey's End Run Nets Touchdown.

Bates then ran up Horween's kick-off from its 10 yard to its 23 yard line. A rush and pass failed and the Maine kicker, Molten, punted out of danger to the Harvard 40 yard mark. Murray tore ahead 15 yards for first down. On the next play Casey sprinted around left end and broke through the field for a touchdown. The goal was kicked by Horween. The first quarter ended after a series of fumbles and incompleted forward passes by both sides, leaving the ball in the opponent's possession on the University's 30 yard mark.

Harvard Scores Soon in 2nd Quarter.

Soon after the opening of the second quarter Harvard forced Bates to give up the ball on downs. Casey repeated his old-time trick on the next play when he wriggled through the line for 4 yards and then by clever dodging broke loose down the field 62 yards for his second score. Horween failed to make the goal.

After the kick-off Bates was tackled twice for a loss, completed a pass for 8 yards, but could not make first down. They kicked, and the University, through a series of rushes and exchanged fumbles, carried the ball to the Bates 43 yard line. Horween's drop-kick fell short, the ball thus going to Bates. Moulton punted to Murray.

Nelson and Kane Penetrate Bates Goal.

Horween attempted a place-kick from the 35 yard mark but failed. Bates soon lost the ball again to N. V. Nelson, Occ., who intercepted a forward pass on their 25 yard line and went over for the fourth touchdown of the game. At this point J. Holmes, Jr. '21 replaced C. A. Clark Jr., Occ., at left guard. Four plays later R. K. Kane '22 picked up a Bates fumble and plunged across the line for another touchdown. Murray kicked the goal. The half ended soon after the next kick-off with the score 33 to 0 in favor of Harvard.

Substitutes Enter in 3rd Quarter.

The third quarter opened with the University represented on the field by a team of substitutes. Although it held Bates to small gains it was unable to score in this quarter, despite repeated line plunges by A. D. Hamilton '21, who substituted for Nelson at right half-back. More than half the period had elapsed before the Harvard eleven got under way. Moulton, the Maine kicker, punted to R. S. Humphrey '21 who tore from his own 45 yard line to the enemy 35 yard line. Nine rushes by Hamilton and F. C. Church '20, alternately, put the ball on the Bates 4 yard mark just as the first session closed.

Church and Humphrey Roll Up Score.

Church drove across the line 30 seconds after the whistle for the first score on the second half. Humphrey brought the score to 40-0 by kicking the goal from the touchdown. After the kick-off Bates lost the ball to the University on downs. Three rushes carried the ball to the Bates 20 yard line. Hamilton then tried for a field goal, without success. Bates then punted to Humphrey who carried the ball 50 yards for another score. Church kicked the goal.

Successful Pass by Crimson.

The downs after Humphrey kicked-off to Bates, the Crimson quarter-back intercepted a pass thus making a gain of 5 yards and putting the ball on Bates 45 yard line. First down was made by Church's dash around left end and Humphrey's buck through center. Another rush was followed by a pretty forward pass from Humphrey to J. K. Desmond, Occ., on the 1 yard line. Hamilton gained the goal line by a dive through center, but failed to kick the goal.

The kick-off was followed by an exchange of punts, and a series of rushes by the Crimson team that left the ball in their possession when the whistle blow
