Red Top, Conn., June 11. -- All three crews took short rows in the morning, spending most of the time practising starts. The first eight, paced in turn by the second and Freshman crews, had a time trial in the afternoon, the result of which was not very satisfactory. The time was 22 minutes and 17 seconds, and at the end of the two mile point the first crew was a length behind the second oarsmen. This is not serious, however, for the second only counted on rowing two miles, while the University eight had to make allowance for a course just twice as long.
Coach Haines is getting in trim for a comp race with Mather Abbott, the Yale coach, a week from tomorrow. The crews are looking forward with great interest to this event, as each crew would consider a victory by its coach as a good omen. F. L. Higginson '00 of the Graduate Rowing Committee arrived at Red Top today.
The shell which was damaged when it was being transported to Red Top has been repaired and will now be used by the Freshman eight.
