Red Top, Conn., June 9.--G. L. Batchelder '19, who is one of the most powerful oarsmen in the second University crew, was elected captain of his boat today. Owing to an unfortunate accident to his knee, which occurred Saturday noon in a baseball game, he is temporarily unable to row and has returned to Boston. He is expected to be well in a day or two however. J. N. Borland '21 is filling his place for the present.
The first eight had a time trial this morning, paced by the second boat for the first two miles and the Freshmen for the remainder of the course. Although there was no official time announced, Coach Haines was very much pleased with the showing. The first crew rowed steadily during the first three quarters of the trial and during the remaining distance the stroke was raised greatly.
Time Trials for Freshmen.
The Freshman oarsmen were put through a time trial this afternoon with the second eight as a pace maker. The time, however, was not very fast as a result of the morning race.
Yesterday was given over to comparative rest. The Freshmen took a four-mile walk, while the University rowers went for a short cruise in G. L. Batchelder's auxillary yawl, the "Dorello." Most of the time that has not been taken up with actual rowing, has been spent in quarters on account of the cold and rain. Rubber boots have been issued and are worn by the men outside.
The Freshman squad was increased by two men yesterday, when C. C. Cabot and H. Brown, who rowed against Exeter Saturday, arrived as substitutes. At the same time the University squad lost C. W. Greenough '19, who was called home because of a death in his family.
