Eight errors by the Williams infield, combined with a decided improvement in the University hitting and a stiffening of the defense, gave the University nine a victory over Williams at Soldiers Field yesterday by a score of 11-4. The visitors out-batted the home team eleven hits to seven, but their costly errors in fielding, and judgment let in many runs for the University. The University nine showed a decided improvement in the field over the exhibition on Saturday.
Hit Williams Pitcher Freely.
F. K. Bullard '20 started on the mound for the University, and, although striking out three men in as many innings, was touched for four hits. In the middle of the third innings, he was replaced by E. S. Hardell '21, who lasted the remainder of the game, and held the Purple nine to one more run. McLean, the star Williams pitcher, proved ineffective, striking out only two men, allowing many hits, especially in the eighth inning, when a batting rally brought in four runs.
In the fourth inning, the University accomplished the unusual feat of scoring four runs on no hits. This was done by means of a base on balls, and four errors in the Williams infield. Other features were the University's three double plays. Score by innings:
