In their second game of the season, the University baseball nine will meet the untried Bates team at Soldiers Field at 3 o'clock this afternoon. R. E. Gross '19 will be unable to play because of an injury to his ankle received in the Bowdoin game, and his place in left field will be taken by J. T. Baldwin '21, or R. H. Bond '19. T. H. Gammack '20 or A. Blair '21 will replace C. S. Stillman '21 behind the bat. Either A. Horween '20 or E. S. Hardell '21 are slated to pitch.
The two teams of the first squad played a short practice game yesterday afternoon. Captain McLeod acted as umpire, being temporarily out of the game with a slightly sprained ankle. R. Harte '17, formerly catcher on the University team, was out in uniform, and played first base on team B.
Leiter Cup Nine vs. Newton High.
A club nine under the leadership of E. A. McCouch '20 was defeated by the Freshman team in a rather loosely played game by a score of 17-4. Today the Leiter Cup team of which G. C. Lee '21 is captain will meet Newton High School on the Freshman field at 3 o'clock.
Beginning with next Monday, when McCouch's team will play Lee's, there will be regular games in the Leiter Cup Series. So far only four teams have been organized, and the baseball management urges more men to sign up, either singly or as teams.
