UNIVERSITY NINE WON 4 TO 3 FROM BOWDOIN

JOHNSON PITCHED WELL

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In a close contest, noticeably lacking in finished play, the University baseball team successfully opened the 1919 season by a 4-3 victory over Bowdoin at Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon: Although marred by many errors, the play showed occasional flashes of brilliancy which gave promise for good work later in the season. S. H. Johnson '20 pitched consistent ball for nine innings, while the University men did not find Flynn difficult. K. W. Perkins '19 and R. W. Emmons '20 led the University batters with two clean singles piece, while W. B. Frothingham '21, C. S. Stillman '21 and L. B. Evans '20 did much to run up the score.

The first run for the University came in the second half of the first inning, when the score stood 1-0 in favor of Bowdoin. After a hit by Emmons, Gross walked. Jones was safe on a fielder's choice which advanced Emmons, but forced Gross out at second. McLeod also was passed, filling the bases. Flynn then gave Perkins his base on balls, forcing Emmons home, and tying the score.

Evans' Bunt Made Score Possible.

Bowdoin and the University each made two more runs, later in the game, making the score 3-3 in the last half of the ninth. C. S. Stillman '21 then reached second on a long hit to left centre-field, and was advanced to third on Evans' sacrifice bunt after Johnson had struck out. Emmons then hit out a stinging grounder between shortstop and third base which brought Stillman across the plate and gave the University the game by a one point margin.

The line-up follows: HARVARD.  BOWDOIN, Evans, c.f.  3b., Donnall Emmons, s.s.  2b., Cook Gross, l.f.  s.s., Finn Jones, r.f.  1b., Casper McLeod, 2b.  c.f., Racine Perkins, 3b.  c., F. Hall Frothingham, 1b.  r.f., Prosser C. Stillman, c.  l.f., Grover Johnson, p.  p., Flynn
