52 CANDIDATES REPORT FOR UNIVERSITY SEVEN

MORE MANAGERS NEEDED

At the meeting of all candidates for the University hockey team in the Union last night, 52 men reported, a number slightly larger than has reported at the first meetings of past years. Although the number of players who came is gratifying, it is hoped that more candidates will sign up for the team at the Athletic Association within the next few days.

Captain N. S. Walker '20, who was the first speaker of the evening, appealed to the candidates for the team to work harder than ever this season in order to bring hockey back to the important position it used to hold in the University. That this year's seven is extremely fortunate in having the new rink so close at hand is also the opinion of Captain Walker.

Clafin Honors Winsor.

W. H. Clafin, Jr., '15, captain of the 1915 hockey team, spoke on the value of hockey of Alfred Winsor '02, who has been the moving spirit of the University's hockey team for many years past. "A change from the tactics that have been used in the Arena is necessary, because of the comparatively small size of the new Ice Pavilion," said Clafin. "Careful thought must be devoted to the problems that confront hockey here this year, but with steady work we should meet with no unusual difficulties."

The plans for the season were outlined, but as they depend largely on the date of the completion of the rink, no definite dates have been set. The team hopes to get out on the natural ice before the Pavilion is finished, and four rinks are being built on Soldiers Field with this in view. There will be no strict training rules until after the Christmas vacation, when practice games have been planned by the management to extend throughout the season.

In the competition for the second assistant managership of the University team, 14 candidates reported yesterday. Other manager candidates from the Sophomore class should report this morning to P. Hofer '21 at the Athletic Association at 8.45.
