ELEVEN RUNS THROUGH LIGHT SIGNAL DRILL AND PRACTICE

Having scrimmaged on Tuesday and Wednesday, the University eleven was sent through a comprehensive signal drill yesterday. Teams A and B ran over the field in this light practice for over an hour and a half. Captain W. J. Murray Occ. piloted Team A throughout the practice, while W. B. Felton Occ. played quarter on the opposing eleven.

So far this week the line has remained practically the same. J. D. Ryan Occ. and P. D. Steele '21 have been holding down the end positions. Both of them played in the Brown game, and it seems likely that they will start in the contest with Virginia tomorrow. The struggle for the wing positions this season has been further complicated by injuries. In the Bates game M. Phinney Occ. and E. D. Weatherhead '22 started, and played so well that they were considered first-string men. The next week, however, Weatherhead was injured and has not played in a game since. J. K. Desmond Occ. filled his place in the Boston College game. During a scrimmage in the ensuing week Phinney wrenched his hip, and is slowly recuperating. Ryan, who went in as a substitute for Phinney in the Boston College game, has played left end ever since. Steele managed to displace Desmond in the struggle with Brown, and has been kept on the first team all week. Whether Phinney and Weatherhead will be able to regain their old positions remains to be seen.

A similar struggle has been in progress for the backfield positions. Many injuries in that department however have left but few men to fill the positions. S. Burnham Occ. returned to practice this week and will probably take a place among the backs in Saturday's game. R. Horween Occ. and E. L. Casey Occ. still watch from the sidelines, while M. Gratwick '22 has recovered from his injury to such an extent that he may enter the game tomorrow. The choice for the three backs besides Murray who will play against Virginia rests between R. S. Humphrey '21, A. Horween '20, A. D. Hamilton '21, S. Burnham Occ. and N. V. Nelson Occ.
