The University tennis team, in its closing match of the season, suffered a 9-to-0 defeat at the hands of Yale Saturday afternoon on Divinity Field. In all but one or two encounters the Eli players won easily. Captains Garland of Yale and E. B. Benjamin '18 of the University squad furnished the star sets of the afternoon. Garland, who is the national junior champion, was expected to win by a large score, but Benjamin forced the match to three deuce sets, 7 to 5, 4 to 6, 9 to 7.

In the doubles A. E. Kirk '20 and C. C. Claflin '20 played their opponents three sets, as did F. M. Warburg '20 and J. S. Levy '20. Garland and Simmons of the Blue players defeated Benjamin and W. W. Rice '18 in lone sets.

The University racquet wielders failed to show the form displayed in previous matches.

However, the team has been affected by the war just as have other sports, and has not shown former University calibre.

The summary:

Singles: Garland (Y) beat Benjamin 7 to 5, 4 to 6, 9 to 7; Simmons (Y) beat Warburg, 6 to 4, 6 to 3; Banks (Y) beat Claflin, 6 to 4, 6 to 0; Wiley (Y) beat Kirk, 4 to 6, 6 to 1, 6 to 0; Morse (Y) beat Rice, 6 to 4, 7 to 5; Hamill (Y) beat Levy, 6 to 0, 7 to 5.

Doubles: Garland and Simmons (Y) beat Benjamin and Rice, 6 to 0, 6 to 0; Morse and Wiley (Y) beat Kirk and Claflin, 1 to 6, 6 to 1, 6 to 2; Banks and Hamill (Y) beat Levy and Warburg, 6 to 0, 4 to 6, 6 to 4.
