BOARD OF OVERSEERS APPOINTED HIM PROFESSOR EMERITUS LAST WEEK.

At the last meeting of the University Board of Overseers the resignation of Ephraim Emerton '71, as Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History, was received and accepted. The resignation is to take effect on September 1, 1918. At the same meeting it was voted by the Overseers to appoint Professor Emerton Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History, emeritus.

Professor Emerton, who has been connected with the Faculty of the University for over 40 years, was born in Salem, February 18, 1851. He was graduated from the University with the degree of A.B. in 1871. For the next five years he pursued his studies first in this country and later in Germany, receiving his Ph.D. at 'Leipzig in 1876. In that same year he became associated with the University as Instructor in History and German. He held this post for two years and from then until 1882 was Instructor in History. In 1882 he was made Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History.

Professor Emerton is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Historical Association, the New England History Teachers' Association, and of the Essex Institute, and a corresponding member of the Institute Genevois. He is the author of several historical text books and studies of theological history, among which are: "Introduction to the Study of the Middle Ages," "Synopsis of the History of Continental Europe," "Medieval Europe," "Desiderius Erasmus," and "Unitarian Thought."
