As a result of developments from the negotiations between the University and Princeton after the debate last Friday, it has definitely been decided to hold this year as usual the Freshman intercollegiate debate between the Freshmen and Yale and Princeton 1921. Unless word to the contrary is received from Yale within the next three days, the debate will be held on May 17, the Freshman negative team meeting the Yale 1921 speakers here, while the affirmative goes to Princeton. It is possible, however, that Yale may ask that the date of the debate be changed to May 10.
To Announce Subject April 22.
According to present plans the subject of the contest will be announced by the University Debating Council on April 22, the first day following the spring recess. The privilege for the final wording of the question would be granted to Yale, who is to announce the definite phrasing of the subject not latter than April 25. If Yale changes the time of the final debate, these dates would correspondingly be advanced one week.
Trials for the Freshman team will probably be held on April 25, 26 and 28. Competitors for the 1921 team would argue the question as worded by Yale. In the event of the debate being changed to May 10 it will be necessary to hold the trials before the Easter vacation on some other subject.
W. L. Prosser '18, who was judged the best speaker in the debate between the University and Princeton last Friday, will coach the Freshmen this year. The prospects for a good team are bright. W. S. Holbrook '21, the first Freshman to make a University team, will be eligible, and the 1921 interdormitory contests which have been held recently have brought out some good 1921 debating material.
