The Freshman seven overwhelmed the Yale 1921 hockey team on the ice at the Arena Saturday night by a score of 7 to 0. All of the goals were made during the first period, when the Freshmen played together in fast, accurate teamplay and completely outwitted the Eli defence. In the second half, however, the Yale freshmen braced and held the 1921 players from further scoring. The heavy defeat of the Elis was due greatly to the fact that it was their first game of the season.
Led by Captain E. L. Bigelow '21 and R. W. Buntin '21, the Freshman seven opened the game with one of the most spirited attacks ever seen in a Freshman game, while the Yale forwards in their turn found it impossible to penetrate the Crimson defence. In less than three minutes Bigelow started the scoring on a clean shot after a pretty run up the rink. Thereafter the game was entirely in the hands of the University players throughout the balance of the half, and the well-filled cheering section was thrilled time and again by the beautiful dashes of Bigelow, Buntin and R. S. Humphrey.
In the second period, the Yale men showed more traditional fighting spirit and, playing a careful defensive game, kept the Freshmen from adding to their lead. Fresh players were sent in to fill positions on both teams, but the changes did not alter the outcome of the game.
Centre Men Scored.
For the Freshman team the centre men and Humphrey were the men who did the scoring, though they were greatly aided by the fast skating and passing of H. P. King '21, as well as by the steady goal-tending of J. Holmes '21. For Yale, the individual stars were Captain Carson at centre-ice, and Welles on the defence, and it was mainly through the efforts of these two that the score was kept as low as it was.
The teams played as follows: Score--Harvard 7. Yale 0. Goals Bigelow (3), Buntin (3), Humphrey. Referee--Denesha. Goal umpires Beckwith and Vaughn. Time--Two 18-minute periods.
