First Lieutenant Alfred A. DeGroot, commander of the second battalion, has been in active service in France for about one year with the 28th Infantry, First Division. This unit fought in the San Mihiel section, and later in the province of Loraine.
Lieutenant DeGroot was born in Morristown, New Jersey, 38 years ago. In 1898 he enlisted in the army, was assigned to the 18th Infantry, and immediately sent to the Philippine Islands, where he remained until after the capture of Manila and the cessation of hostilities. After the war Lieutenant De Groot remained in the army, and was commissioned second lieutenant in the 28th Infantry in May, 1917. He was promoted to his present rank in August, 1917, but whether he was in France at that time or not is not yet known, because the date of sailing of his unit has been kept secret.
He was sent back to this country last June on account of severe illness, and has been convalescing since then until his recent assignment to the Harvard S. A. T. C.
