The informal University football team brought out only 22 men to practice yesterday afternoon, barely enough for two elevens. This small number of candidates will make it virtually impossible to play any outside games, unless more material is forthcoming, not only be cause there is a derarth of experienced players but also because what men have reported will have no one against whom to scrimmage in order to get in condition for outside games. Such informal games, with teams representing military and naval organizations especially, will in all likelihood be scheduled if enough enthusiasm is shown in the next few days and more candidates take an interest in the game and volunteer.
Those men who reported yesterday were drilled in fundamentals under the direction of G. D. Flynn '19. For a portion of the time a semblance of real football was introduced by a drill in simple formations by the backfield candidates.
With a squad of 68, the 1921 team met for the third time to work again on fundamentals. Because of the military meeting, the practice was considerably shortened, and so was lighter than the third practice would ordinarily justify.
For the purpose of individual instruction, the squad was divided into small groups. Coach Wallace and W. B. Snow '18 drilled the linemen in charging, falling on and passing the ball, while some time was spent in waddling and throwing the medicine ball to condition the men. For the ends, under V. F. Likins '18, the work was much the same. The backs, however, under Coach Donovan were drilled in starting, dodging, and punting.
The tentative schedules of games for the Freshman team which has been arranged with the Yale and Princeton Freshmen and other teams will soon be definitely announced.
