At the Commencement exercises at Yale yesterday, Dean Briggs was awarded an honorary degree of L.L.D. In presenting Dean Briggs as a candidate for an honorary degree, Professor Woolsey said:
"LeBaron Russell Briggs--In Harvard's service from his youth up, dean of the college, president of Radcliffe, serene of temper and of a high spirit, distinguished in administration, his writings full of wit and sense, Dean Briggs has been a power for righteousness in many college generations. A friend of Yale and a friend of all the world."
703 Degrees in Course.
A total of 703 degrees were awarded in course and 17 honorary degrees were conferred. This year the academic department regained its supremacy over the Sheffield Scientific School, exceeding it by 82 in numbers. The distribution of the degrees was as follows:
Bachelor of Arts, 303; Bachelors of Philosophy, 221; Bachelors of the Fine Arts, 6; Bachelors of Music, 6; Bachelor's of Laws, 37; Bachelor of Civil Law, 1; Bachelors of Divinity, 28; Masters of Arts, 18; Masters of Science, 9; Mechanical Engineers, 6; Engineers of Mines, 4; Metallurgical Engineer, 1; Masters of Forestry, 15; Doctor of Civil Law, 1; Doctors of Medicine, 10; Doctors of Philosophy, 37; total, 703.
