The Corps marched gallantly down the street towards Soldiers Field. To anyone watching a thrill of power must have come at this epitomized unison and strength. Two peasant women from some state in Southern Europe stood stolidly looking at the companies go past. They watched dully and stupidly. On the head of each was balanced a huge overtopping bundle which must have rested not lightly on the cushions of their brains. They were of the ruled class of Europe.
America goes forth in a few weeks time to fight nobly for liberty. Our desire, hardened to unchangeable determination, is to free Europe from Germany. That is a laudable determination, and true to our history. Yet not ten million fighting men could free Europe from her ignorance, her ancient brutality, her narrowness, and her political sin. That rests with Europe. And to date that Government which has been called the most enlightened democracy existent has refused to recognize the freedom of women.
