FENCERS SUCCESSFUL IN MEETS OF RECENT SEASON

Were Victorious in Four Out of Five Dual Contests and Second in Intercollegiates.

With the securing of second place in the intercollegiate championship meet, the University fencing team concluded one of the most successful seasons it has had in past years. Victories were won over Springfield Y. M. C. A. College, Bowdoin, Pennsylvania and Columbia, while the only defeat in a dual match was suffered in the meet with Yale. Yale was later defeated in the intercollegiate meet.

The past season appears the more successful in comparison with last year's record. In 1915-16 the University lost to both the Springfield College and Pennsylvania swordsmen, and finished in fifth place in the intercollegiate meet. The tournament with Yale last year was lost by a much larger score, despite the absence of Captain W. H. Russell '18 in the match at New Haven this year. Throughout every contest on their schedule the University team displayed a more finished brand of fencing than has been the case in past seasons.

Captain Russell and Gay Mainstays.

Captain Russell was, of course, the mainstay of the team, although he was tied for third place in the individual rating in the championship meet by E. R. Gay '19. Gay also had a creditable record for the year, being the only man in the intercollegiate tournament to defeat Captain Jeter of the Navy, who won the championship.

Prospects for next year are very promising as the University has the only team in the East that will have every man back who fenced this season.
