Word was received last night by President Lowell from General Hugh L. Scott and Captain A. W. Bjornstadt that the Reserve Officers' Training Unit has been definitely established at the University, and the official announcement from the Government will be made today. This finally puts the military plans of the University on an official basis, and the work done here will now be fully recognized by the Government.
Captain Cordier will now be given full powers as commandant of the corps. All those who have joined the state militia may enter the corps by applying for their discharge to the proper authorities.
The enrolment blanks, a copy of which appeared in yesterday's CRIMSON, are at the headquarters, Weld 3, and men can sign up there today.
Some question has arisen in regard to the requirement of a summer camp. Men entering the unit at the beginning of the second half-year will be required to attend such camp unless the international situation has so improved as to warrant its discontinuance. Men who entered Military Science and Tactics 1 at the beginning of the year will not be held for the camp unless they volunteer. Men who do not attend the camp cannot be recommended for commissions until after those who have completed the regular summer work.
A fund is being raised by the graduates to provide for any immediate expenses incurred by the unit. This will make the regiment independent of Government appropriations and supplies, in case of either delay or shortage.
Men desiring information concerning the course should enquire at headquarters.
The attention of all prospective members of the training corps is invited to paragraph 4 of the enrolment blank. This will free each student in the corps from subsequent obligation to serve in any capacity in the land forces of the United States, unless when offered a commission, he shall voluntarily choose to do so. Paragraph 5, Captain Cordier states, will also allow students with dependant relatives or otherwise unable to serve in the land forces of the United States to be honorably discharged for sufficient cause if deemed wise in the opinion of the commandant
