THE RED CROSS DRIVE

If some of us wonder why so many war-charity campaigns have been carried on among Harvard students, let us remember that these campaigns are national affairs and that Harvard is a part of this nation. The University has its share of work to do in every appeal made to the American public, and we shall expect to be called upon so long as we remain a national institution. If we are able to give, the appeal should be made; if we are able to give, the appeal will not be made in vain.

Today the Red Cross asks us to join an organization whose object is to lessen the sufferings of our nation's defenders—of the world's defenders. One dollar is the amount called for. There are few who cannot give this sum. The splendid gift of the American people to the Red Cross last spring proved that we were thinking of something beside sending our soldiers into battle. We wanted them cared for in their dangers. This spirit of loving kindness is with us more than ever at this time of year. As Christmas draws near, our first war Christmas, we should be cold, unfeeling people were our thoughts not with our brave men more than ever. By assisting a society which will make these soldiers more comfortable, more cheerful and more contented, we shall be acting in accordance with Christmas spirit. The Red Cross deserves the support of every Harvard man.
