The informal University football team opened its season Saturday with a 27 to 0 victory over Dean Academy, in a game of straight and rather elementary football. The University team out-weighed and outplayed the preparatory school eleven, but the Dean player forced hard play throughout the game. Captain W. B. Snow '18, was easily the star of the University line, making holes again and again for the backs, and stopping many opposing rushes. He was ably seconded in this work by T. S. Woods '20, playing at left tackle. In the backfield, the hard-hitting line plunges of A. Horween '20 were most effective. He was used only in the first half; in the second, the longest gains were made by R. Hoffman '19, who followed J. G. Coolidge '20 as quarterback. Hoffman made one run of 80 yards from a kick-off in the last quarter, but the ball was recalled on account of holding. The punting throughout the game was done by F. C. Church '20, who also kicked three goals from touchdowns.
Horween Scores Twice.
In the first half, straight line rushes, in which Horween bore the brunt of the playing, succeeded in carrying the ball over the Dean goal-line twice. The second touch-down was especially noteworthy, as it was gained by an 80 yard march down the field after a touchback on the kick-off. Both these touchdowns were scored by Horween.
In the second half the University used many substitutes while Dean showed a better defence. When Mullen of the Dean team dropped a punt, T. S. Woods '20 seized the ball and opened the way for the third score. Again on a fumble by Caldwell in midfield, Woods got the ball and was stopped only at the three yard line. Hallowell '20 then took the ball over for the fourth and last score.
