P. D. Haughton '99, head coach of former University teams, spent the entire afternoon yesterday in studying the football situation at Soldiers Field.
He gave out the following statement:
"The informals are showing a commendable spirit. With the large amount of time which military and naval activities take, it is remarkable that as much interest has been taken in football this year as is in evidence here today.
"Football is a hard game, calling for soldier-like qualities. There can be no better training for military men than this strenuous game. At all army and navy camps football is encouraged, and at Ayer thousands are in the different squads.
"The 11 men of the football team must be drilled in much the same manner as a company of recruits. It takes a long time to learn the fundamentals and after these the finished team must master a varied attack.
"The informals and the Freshman team show the same early season mistakes that are apparent each year in every squad. With the material at hand and under heavy difficulties, Coaches Rollins, Wallace, and their assistants have done splendidly. I don't know how often I shall be at the field, but at every opportunity I shall come out for the afternoon."
For 30 minutes the informals and Freshmen scrimmaged in the first hard workout of the week. The lineup of the informals lacked several regulars who were given another day's rest before the practice game with the Boston College team today. The play of the 1921 line and the broken field running of R. Hoffman '19, featured the scrimmage.
The tackles and guards on the Freshman team showed great improvement, H. H. Faxon '21, and J. Gaston '21, particularly stopping many plays. H. S. Humphrey '21, and E. A. Stillman '21, in the backfield, made most of the gains. The team's tackling, however, was ragged. L. Crosscup '19, and R. Hoffman '19, were the fastest backs on the informal team. B. S. Blanchard '20, and A. Horween '20, did not appear in the scrimmage.
The line did not show the improvement of the backfield.
No attempt at regular football was made, the ball being placed in all parts of the field at the direction of the coaches.
The informals were stronger than the Freshmen and had possession of the ball the greater part of the time. Forward passing was tried with some success by the informals.
