The University informal baseball team easily defeated the team of Naval Reservists 6-1, in a six-inning game yesterday afternoon. Not once was the University lead in danger, and the naval team was fortunate to score at all. A formal parade of the Naval Radio School stopped the game at the beginning of the seventh inning just after Cleary had doubled.
In the second inning, E. A. McCouch '20 and J. B. Wolverton '20 scored on two hits and a fielder's choice. S. W. Johnson '20 made a third run in the next inning on an error, a sacrifice, and a passed ball.
Hits by Gourdin and H. R. Caley '17 in the fifth gave the defeated nine its only run. In the same inning, F. K. Bullard '20 was hit by a pitched ball, went to second on a fielder's choice and scored on an outfield error. L. B. Evans '20 and H. D. Ward '20 reached first and second respectively, but were left there.
The first half of the sixth inning saw a very clever double play by E. A. McCouch '20. W. B. Felton '19 had reached first for the Naval Reservists, when Clements hit to right field. McCouch caught the ball on the fly and by a quick throw caught Felton off first.
The informals scored their last two runs on three solid hits by L. P. Jones '20, E. A. McCouch '20, and J. B. Fisher '20 and two misplays.
The Naval Reservists' lack of practice was very evident in their batting, although their fielding was comparatively good.
The informal team will play again today when it opposes the Fort Warren nine, which will be under the direction of R. Harte '17, catcher and heaviest hitter of the 1914 and 1915 teams.
