Official word has been received by President Lowell from the French Embassy at Washington to the effect that Captain Amann, who has been detailed as Professor of Military Sciences at the University, will be recalled and assigned to one of the army camps. Another communication received yesterday, however, announces that the work of the French Military Mission at Harvard will be continued throughout the year by Lieutenant Colonel Azan and Lieutenant Andre Morize. The other members of the original mission, of which Captain Amann was never a member, are also to be assigned to the regular army camps. An extract from the letter of Ambassador Jusserand to President Lowell follows:
"Major de Reviers de Mauny and Captain Dupont will have to work henceforth in conjunction with the regular Federal army. Lieutenant Colonel Azan and Lieutenant Morize will remain at Harvard; the former having to add to his duties there the supervision of the teaching given by several of our officers in some of the army camps."
Though the loss of Captain Amann will be keenly felt, nevertheless there is no doubt that Lieutenant Morize is exceptionally qualified to carry out the work of which he was one of the original organizers. It is interesting to note that Ambassador Jusserand gives precedence to the work to be done by Colonel Azan at the University when stating that the supervision by the French Officers in the army camps is to be maintained in addition to the work here.
Lieutenant Morize will probably have active charge of the training of the men and will deliver many of the lectures. Colonel Azan will continue to direct the instruction and will also lecture.
As announced in yesterday's CRIMSON, rifles will be given out Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week. The supply department has been able to secure gun slings and sight covers which will be given out at the same time. The Military authorities have decided to allow members of the University to keep their rifles in their own rooms. A suitable arrangement for men living at home and others to keep rifles at the armory will be made.
