FRENCH AMBULANCE UNITS HAVE NEED OF VOLUNTEERS

Although fourteen undergraduate volunteers went to France to work in the Harjes Ambulance Corps, the official representative of the American-Red-Cross in France, today there is an even more crying need for volunteers. Combined with the Harjes Unit is that conducted by Richard Norton '92 and that conducted by H. C. Hoskier, Father of R. W. Hoskier '18, who is flying in the French Aviation Service. These three sections combined together, while not as large as the American Ambulance, are at present striving to do America's part at the front. The work in this unit has an especial appeal to the undergraduate be cause the unit is still small enough to emphasize the individual work and spirit with which undergraduates are so endowed. Below is a letter from Mr. Hoskier, who has been working in France since the war began, which will give all who are considering joining a frank opinion of what is needed.

Much "slush" has recently appeared in the American press about the wonderful work that Americans are doing in ambulance work on the French front. It is true that some men have been wounded in the performance of their duty, but all told what does America's part in this amount to? Out of a hundred million people only two or three hundred are working at the front, or near the front, in ambulance work. The term of the engagement is only six months and very few stay on after the period has elapsed. As one who has been at this work for a twelvemonth I would like to say that recruits are urgently needed. We want men who have had experience in driving and can make their own running repairs. It has been perfectly extraordinary how the wrong.
