The University fencing team will have its first match of the year with Bowdoin on Friday, January 19. Bowdoin has developed a strong team this year from its usual supply of good material. The University team has sustained a great loss in the withdrawal of G. H. Code '18, manager and one of the mainstays of the team, who will be unable to fence this year because of illness. Nevertheless the team is unusually strong. The team, as it will oppose Bowdoin, will be composed of Captain W. H. Russell '18, R. Crimmins '19, E. Gay '19, and E. P. Hamilton '18. Other meets have been arranged with Springfield, Pennsylvania and Yale. The full schedule will be announced a tan early date.
A cup has been offered by Paul Roberts '14 for award in the fencing tournament for Freshmen which is to be held this winter. The competition will be open to all members of the Class of 1920, and all those who intend to compete should report at the fencing room in Hemenway Gymnasium to start conditioning work.
A novice meet also will be held in competition for the novice cup which has been given by the Athletic Association. This meet will be open to all members of the University who have not taken part in competition fencing for more than one year.
