CROSS-COUNTRY ON UP GRADE

Although it is too early to prophecy in very certain terme, prospects for a good cross-country team appear fairly bright. Coach Shrubb has at his disposal quite a large amount of seasoned material and his chief task will be to develop runners capable of keeping pace with the stars of other colleges.

Veterans of last year's team now available include Captain A. R. Bancroft '17, G. A. King '18, W. P. Whitehouse 2d, '17, R. S. Cook '17, H. R. Bechtel; '17, and R. W. Babcock '17. All of the above have already reported except Whitehouse who has been laid up with a bad foot. The University squad is greatly strengthened by additional men from last year's Freshman team, which placed four men ahead of the leading Yale runner a year ago. J. D. Hutchinson, captain of the 1919 track and cross-country teams, has been showing up particularly well. G. H. Tilghman '19 and E. H. Kelton '19 are also promising runners. Other sophomores who add to the strength of the squad include J. M. Greene '19, H. E. Small '19 and J. B. Hopkins '19. J. W. Feeny '18, J. H. Townsend '17 and H. S. Boyd '17 are experienced and valuable runners. There are in addition some new men on the squad who look promising.

R. H. Davision '17 will probably be unable to run this year as he is suffering from a weak ankle, but he may assist in coaching the Freshman team. Injuries or ineligibility deprived the team of several good runners in the Junior Class. L. K. Moorehead, captain of the 1918 team may be able to run if his foot does not trouble him, but C. W. P. Heffinger '18, who is now on the border, and H. P. Carpenter '18 will not be available.

Yesterday's work consisted of a fast run on the Cemetery course for the University candidates and a run around the outside of the Stadium for the Freshmen and for those reporting for the first time. The 1920 squad is exceptionally small and more men will have to come out if the good record made by previous classes is to be kept up in the four meets this year.

There will be consolation runs the week of the intercollegiates for both University and Freshman runners over the Belmont course.
