UNIVERSITY CREW DEFEATED YALE BOAT IN RECORD TIME

Breaking the course record by eight seconds and finishing four lengths ahead of the Yale boat, the University crew set once and forever the stamp of success upon Coach Herrick and the system which he stands for. Jumping into an early lead the University oarsmen set the pace the entire distance, gradually lengthening their lead until at the finish line three boat lengths of open water separated the shells. A half length lead at the first mile post was slowly increased until the final mile, when Lund pushed the stroke up a couple of notches and the University boat pulled steadily away from the blue oarsmen, who were rowing individually strongly but utterly lacking in rythm. The University boat was a well ordered machine efficiently doing the work it was made for, while the Yale shell was filled with eight powerful oarsmen who failed simply because they lacked unity and precision. The official time of the race was 20.02, eight seconds better than the mark set up by the Yale crew in 1888.

The University captured both the morning races, the second crew winning an easy race in 10.25, while the freshmen after a bad start followed the Yale boat until the last quarter mile when by a splendid spurt, they caught up on their opponents and led at the finish by two and two-fifths seconds, with a time of 9.36 3-5.

The freshman four oar was also successful, finishing eleven seconds ahead of the Yale youngsters. The only race to go to Yale was the gentlemen's eight, which the Eli graduates captured handily.
