Williams comes to Soldiers Field this afternoon for its annual contest with the University baseball team. The strength of the Purple aggregation is rather hard to estimate, since its showing has been very irregular. Getting away to a poor start, the team dropped four out of five games on the spring trip, being beaten by Virginia, Georgetown, Princeton, and the Army, all four of which have since been defeated by the University nine. On April 29 Holy Cross took a 2 to 1 victory and a week later Virginia won again. When a second game was staged with Princeton, the Tigers duplicated their former victory.
But ten days ago the team met Yale and won handily 5 to 3, putting up an errorless game in the field and doing some very effective work with the bat. Two teams have been met since then, Amherst and Wesleyan, and both have been turned away with the short end of the score. Individually, the visitors possess a sensational out-fielder in Captain Seibert and a consistent hitter in Clark, the veteran shortstop.
For the University, Whitney, who pitched a no-hit, no-run game a year ago, is the logical choice. However, his hand, injured in practice last week, is still sore and may prevent his taking his turn in the box. In that case Garritt will probably be sent in to pitch.
