A University pitcher again took a large part in securing a victory for his team when Mahan faced Pennsylvania at Philadelphia Saturday, for he struck out 11 men, allowed only three scattered hits, drove in two runs himself, and secured a 4 to 0 shut-out.
The game was clinched in the first inning. After Coolidge had failed to reach first, Captain Nash doubled, and soon after stole third. Cromwell purposely passed Harte, evidently preferring to pitch to those who followed him. Mahan was the first of these, and he tripled. In the second inning, Fripp started the play with a single, and in quick succession stole two bases. Speilman here relieved Cromwell, and forced Percy to foul to Gilmore. Bothfeld, the next man up, drove the run across by singling to left. The scoring ended with one more run in the fifth, on the occasion of a pass for Coolidge and Harte's poorly-fielded single.
As was the case in the Virginia game, the University profited greatly by the throwing weakness of the opposing catcher. In all, Coach Mitchell's men stole seven bases, Fripp and Percy each stealing two. The summary follows:
