E. R. Roberts '16, the University's only entrant in the Pennsylvania Relay Carnival yesterday, showed up well, winning third place in throwing the 56-pound weight and second place in the hammer throw. Brown, the recently discovered Yale "crack" weightman, failed to place in the hammer throw because of fouling.
The summary of the weight events follows:
56-pound weight throw.--Won by White of Syracuse, distance, 31 ft. 5 in.; second, Richards of Cornell, distance, 30 ft. 10 1-2 in.; third, E. R. Roberts '16, distance, 29 ft. 2 in.; fourth, Johnson of Syracuse, distance, 27 ft. 4 1-2 in.
Hammer throw.--McCormick of Cornell, distance, 155 ft.; second, E. R. Roberts '16, distance, 136 ft. 8 1-2 in.; third, White of Syracuse.
In the 56-pound weight throw all the above men beat last year's record of 27 ft. 4 1-2 in.
Pennsylvania hung up a new world's record when it won the sprint medley relay race in 3 minutes 28 3-5 seconds. Meredith, captain of the Pennsylvania team and holder of several world's records, stepped the last relay, the half-mile, in 1 minute 54 4-5 seconds, which is within 1 2-5 seconds of the intercollegiate record and exceptionally fast considering the condition of the track.
The University will have 12 athletes entered in the Pennsylvania Relay Carnival at Franklin Field today. The strongest event for the University this year will be the One-Mile College Relay Championship. Last spring the team was nosed out by Pennsylvania in world's record time. As the Pennsylvania team is about the same and the University quartet somewhat stronger, today's race should be even more hotly contested.
The results of the relay races held between the University and Pennsylvania at various meets throughout the winter indoor season show that Pennsylvania is slightly superior. Out of three races the University won one and Pennsylvania two. The Harvard quarter will be picked from the following men: A. Biddle '16, Captain W. J. Bingham '16, T. R. Pennypacker '16, E. A. Teschner '17, and W. Willcox, Jr., '17.
It was learned yesterday that the track team will be without the services of H. W. Minot '17 and J. Coggeshall, Jr., '18, as both are reported on the sick list. Minot was entered in the 440-yard hurdles and the 120-yard hurdles.
In the 100-yard dash, E. A. Teschner '17 and W. Moore '18 will represent the University. Teschner has been making fast time and should easily place in this event. H. J. Coolidge '16 is the only entrant for the University in the 120-yard high hurdles, and J. O. Johnstone '16 the only one in the high-jump.
The shot-put entry will be A. T. Lyman '16, who has been performing particularly well lately. The 440-hurdles will have no University entry now that H. W. Minot '17 is incapacitated. W. Rollins '16 and J. O. Johnstone '16 are entered in the broad-jump, and E. R. Roberts '16 may compete in the discus throw.
G. G. Haydock '16 and C. S. Babbitt '18 in the pole-vault should both be heard from, particularly Haydock, who has shown consistent 12-foot form the past winter
