The University gymnastic team was defeated by Brown in Providence Saturday evening, the final score being 32 to 22. The team, owing to the loss of D. Campbell '17 and the fact that the Brown aggregation contained a greater number of brilliant and versatile performers than the University, was the cause of the distinctly up-hill nature of the struggle for the University team. The latter, however, gave an excellent exhibition, and Captain W. Campbell '16 was well up to his usual form, securing one first and three second places. Campbell proved equal to the first position in the parallel bars, and to second man in the horizontal bar, the flying rings, and the side-horse.
Mattison was the best all-around performer for Brown, making an exceptionally fine showing in the first exercise of the horizontal bar, in which he executed a remarkably smooth double-reverse on the giant swing.
Finch, of Brown, gave an excellent performance in the club swinging.
In the side-horse event, Jones, of Brown, Captain W. Campbell '16, and Abbott, of Brown, the three men who won first, second, and third places respectively, were almost on a par, there being not more than two points difference between the first and third man.
The following is the summary:
Club Swinging: Won by Finch (B.); second, Pierce (B.); third, H. R. Bechtel '17.
Horizontal Bar: Won by Mattison (B.); second, W. Campbell '16; third, J. M. French '17.
Side-Horse: Won by Jones (B.); second, W. Campbell '16; third, Abbott (B.).
Parallel Bars: Won by W. Campbell '16; second, Mattison (B.); third, Jones (B.).
Flying Rings: Won by Ventrome (B.); second, W. Campbell '16; third, Mattison (B.).
Tumbling: Won by M. Blanchard '18; second, Finch (B.); third, T. A. Smith '18.
