VOLUNTEERS FROM THE WEST

Harvard regards with justice that her service to the cause of national preparedness and the Plattsburg camps, and to the cause of humanity in the ambulance service of France is unsurpassed. Our lead in graduates who have offered their services to the warring powers is natural because no other university has closer ties of friendship with Europe.

But now comes word from the Pacific Coast that through the generosity of some wealthy citizens of San Francisco a hundred undergraduates of Leland Stanford have volunteered for a half-year's service in the war zone. It is not merely the number of the volunteers which is remarkable, but the spirit they have shown in heeding what is a universal call for aid.

They come from the Far West, where of necessity the interests of the belligerents and the stupendous tragedy of the great struggle must be felt less keenly. They are going a longer distance to "do their bit." The spirit that is symbolized in the service of these hundred men is worthy of our highest praise.

Although the University's numerical superiority in the relief work seems threatened, in such kindly rivalry we can feel only pleasure. If Harvard's lead is to remain undiminished, let it be by no abatement of volunteers from other Universities, but through increased service from all men who can find the means or time to do their share.

It is with pride in our mutual Americanism that we recognize Leland Stanford's praiseworthy contribution of men. As one nation from coast to coast our men are going forth to perform a great, unselfish work. This newest enlistment is typical of the generosity of the boundless West.
