AN INTERLUDE IN VICTORIES

For four consecutive years Harvard has celebrated victories over Yale. Last Saturday was the first time under Haughton's regime that the Blue eleven has been able to cross our goal line. Such a series of glorious conquests must not be forgotten at a time of temporary defeat. Yale won a close, fiercely-contested battle and won with a superior football machine. Every gridiron contest is decided to a greater or less degree by the so-called breaks of the game. The advantages of this character certainly were with the Blue, combined with these was a well-trained, powerful unit--the combination which spelled victory for Yale.

Yet transcending the bitter disappointment of defeat is the satisfaction of knowing that our team fought with a tonacity and spirit that will long be remembered by Harvard men. With a Yale team spurred on by the goad of former crushing defeats only twelve yards from a touchdown, the Crimson line withstood eight frantic onslaughts, while the fighting spirit of Harvard reduced the gains from yards to foot. Such a superhuman stand was a tribute to both the coaches and players of the 1916 team.

The first games of the season showed an inexperienced squad of possible football players, but Saturday's exhibition was conclusive evidence that the efforts of the coaches had worked a miracle in the final development of a team that Harvard is justly proud of. One cycle of Harvard victories has been terminated, but the prospects for the beginning of another are bright, the greatest credit is due the Yale team that has finally conquered, but Captain Dadmun and his men will always be honored for their wonderful exhibition of fight and pluck.
