The plea of Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University, New York, for an increase of $30,000,000 in the endowment fund of that institution so that it may proceed at once with important undertakings, illustrates, among other things, the marvellous advance that has taken place in the conception of the mission and scope of higher education since the days of John Harvard and Eli Yale. The college founder or president who used to think in terms of thousands is now thinking in terms of millions and tens of millions. Christian Science Monitor.
