The Student Council has hit upon a commendable idea in proposing the adoption of a system of student waiters at the University dining halls. The possibilities of the dining halls as aids to self-supporting students are coming more and more to be realized by the universities. Princeton adopted the system last fall, and reports excellent results. At present the Varsity Club and Foxcroft Hall give employment to a very few men. Memorial and the Freshman Dormitories offer facilities for aiding large numbers more. Men both in the College and in the Graduate Schools constantly apply at the Student Employment Office for positions and have to be refused. This arrangement would solve the problem.
There are obstacles, chief among them the danger of impairing the service. But by the careful supervision of experienced men this should be avoidable. The authorities at Princeton declare that the men feel their responsibility and work conscientiously. They wait diligently upon the guests; then they sit down and wait upon the waiters. The waiters and the waited upon are both satisfied. And there is no unnecessary waiting.
Incidentally, the present Student Council is to be congratulated upon its initiative. By the time its term of office is over every man in the University will be either a soldier or a waiter.
