The first of the regular weekly handicap competitions in the pole vault in the Baseball Cage was won yesterday by M. T. MacDonald '18, G. G. Haydock '16, and J. J. Albright '19, tied for second place. The winner's actual vault was 10 feet 6 inches, but a handicap of 9 inches gave him a total of 11 feet 3 inches. Haydock was at scratch and did 11 feet, while Albright had a handicap of 2 feet 9 inches.
This afternoon the competitions in the broad and high jumps will begin at 4 o'clock. These events are open to both University and Freshmen and everyone will be handicapped so that all will start on the same footing. As more men are needed for this work there is an excellent opportunity for beginners to get a start in these events. Besides the invaluable practice afforded under expert coaching, cups are awarded at the close of the competition.
Tomorrow at 3 o'clock the shot-putting contests and the competition in throwing the 35-pound weight will start. The University candidates throw a 16-pound shot while the Freshmen use a 12-pounder. The rules governing these events are the same throughout. Handicaps will be assigned and cups given the winners at the end of the winter season. In each event two prizes will be awarded, one to the man having the best average for the entire competition and another to the one making the best single scratch record.
