According to comic supplement traditions, an umpire is a species of reptile, cozing with venom, and warped with hatred against one or both teams in a ball game. Therefore the slogan of all right-minded partisans is, "Kill the umpire," on all available occasions. But consider the life of an umpire. Nobody loves him, and no matter what he says, he hurts somebody's feelings. He is there to earn his living as competently as he can, and he is not eaten with hatred for anybody. What is the use of futile demonstrations against his decisions? The stands may well follow the example of the members of the team in contrast to some of our more hot-headed opponents.
