BEER QUESTION LEFT TO SEPARATE CLASSES

After discussion on the report of the executive committee concerning the beer question, the Student Council last evening decided that individual classes may deal with the liquor question as follows: "A meeting of the class shall be called within six days after the receipt of a brought before the meeting. At this meeting the president may take a vote on petition signed by 25 members of the class stating the proposition to be said subject, the outcome of which may influence him to take action, but shall not be binding upon him." It was further moved and passed that the presidents of the classes give special attention at present to the above clause concerning special meetings, and that in the future the presidents, at a special meeting with the executive committee directly after their election, be acquainted with their powers and duties.

Further recommendations supplementing those made to the Faculty at the last meeting, in regard to the oral examinations, to be considered by a sub-committee, were submitted to the Council by the executive committee. They are as follows:

1. The text of the examination is to be free from any but common idioms, and from technical words or phrases.

2. The text is to contain subject matter that would be clear to the candidate in English version, without reference to the rest of the text.

3. No candidate is to be dismissed until he is told of his success or failure.

4. No candidate is to be failed on evidence of a single oral paper; at least two passages should be set before him.

5. Elements tending to disconcert candidates are to be minimized.

6. The texts set for translation are to be approved by more than one examiner.

7. The tutors supervising the work of candidates are to work in co-operation with the examiners, perhaps serving on the board of examiners themselves; and they are to have some part in the framing of the examinations for their charges.

In addition a motion was passed that more frequent opportunities for taking orals be given those who are on probation on that account.

A special committee of five is to be appointed by the president to consider a reduction in the number of the Council.

A committee consisting of H. Francke '15, W. H. Trumbull, Jr., '15, S. M. Felton, Jr., '16, W. Willcox, Jr., '17, and Moseley Taylor '18, was elected to investigate the condition of the Union and submit recommendations to the College authorities.

The Council wishes to urge that all men consult with Dr. R. I. Lee as to the opportunity for becoming innoculated against typhoid fever.

The Student Council will hold its last meeting of the year some time in May
