The crews have been spending the latter part of the week in easy practice races. On Friday the first and second boats rowed over the Henley course together. At Cottage Farm Bridge the race commenced, the second boat being given a lead of one length. The first crew got the jump, making an excellent racing start, and closed up the lead half a length in the first 20 strokes. The seconds were good at a low stroke, but when it had to be put up the first soon showed its superiority. Thus, after averaging about 32 strokes per minute, the first crew, spurting at the finish, swept over the line a victor with a two-lengths advantage.
On Saturday the first crew rowed down-stream over the four-mile course, picking up the Freshmen at the two-mile mark, Cottage Farm Bridge. The first found little difficulty in over-coming the lead granted the Freshmen, and out-distanced the younger crew at the finish.
On account of a slight attack of grippe A. W. Pope '18 was not in his accustomed position at 6, his place being occupied by Moseley Taylor '18, who came down from number 2. E. Holt '18 rowed 2. The orders of the crews follow:
First crew.--Stroke, Lund; 7, Cabot; 6, Parson; 5, H. W. Middendorf; 4, Harwood; 3, Stebbins; 2, Morgan; bow, Murray (captain); cox., Kreger.
Second crew.--Stroke, Brown; 7, Richardson; 6, Ely; 5, Soucy; (captain); 4, J. W. Middendorf; 3, Potter; 2, Talcott; bow, Busk; cox., Cameron.
First Freshman crew.--Stroke, Wiggin; 7, Quinby; 6, Taylor; 5, Nathan; 4, Davis; 3, Mackie; 2, Holt; bow, Brazer; cox., Place.
