432 MEN HAVE ENLISTED IN UNIVERSITY BATTALION

TRIAL PLANS NOT DECIDED, BUT WILL HAVE WEEKLY DRILLS AND LECTURES.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

According to the latest figures available last night, 432 men have enlisted for the University Battalion. Another hundred men by tomorrow night will doubly insure the co-operation of the War Department in Washington, the arrangement being that if 400 men enlisted by Friday the Government would supply the equipment for the contingent.

For the benefit of many who seem uncertain as to the exact purpose, method of organization, qualifications and requirements for joining the battalion, the committee announces the following tentative plan. However, the arrangements have not been definitely settled nor approved by the authorities as yet.

Enlistment For Rest of Year

The term of enlistment is for the rest of this college year only, the work beginning as soon as possible and ending shortly before the final examination period. There will be no practice during the midyear examinations and the April recess. No summer work is included in the schedule, but the men are urged to attend the summer camp at Plattsburg if possible.

The work will consist of one two-hour drill and a one-hour lecture each week, the drill being of close order work and rifle practice in the Baseball Cage and Hemenway Gymnasium during the winter and next spring open order drill, coupled with some field work and practice in minor tactics. The lectures will be given by army officers on the elements of military science and problems of strategy.

The battalion will be divided into war strength companies and separate drill hours assigned the different companies, ample opportunity being given everyone to sign up in the company whose drill hours are most convenient for him.

The purpose of the battalion is to give the members some knowledge of military matters and a general insight into the actual workings of an army in operation.
