CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM WON OVER YALE BY TWO POINTS

In a close and hard-fought race, the University cross-country team defeated Yale 27 to 29 at New Haven Saturday.

Captain J. W. Overton of Yale led practically all the way and set up a new record of 36 minutes, 43 seconds for the course. R. S. Young of Yale was second, finishing close behind. The next four places went to the University. K. E. Fuller '16 won his "H" by finishing third in 37 minutes, 28 seconds. Fourth place was taken by G. A. King '18, who covered the distance in 38 minutes, 12 2-5 seconds. Captain R. T. Twitchell '16, won fifth place in the time of 38 minutes, 24 seconds. He was followed by W. P. Whitehouse, 2d, '17, who finished in 38 minutes, 55 2-5 seconds, although handicapped by trouble with his feet. E. A. Krauss was the third Yale man to finish and took seventh place, covering the distance in 39 minutes, 10 seconds. H. S. Gulliver of Yale was eighth, and R. W. Babcock '17 came in ninth, being the University's fifth man. R. S. Cook '17 finished tenth just ahead of N. H. Platt who completed Yale's score. H. R. Bechtel '17 came in twelfth and was followed in order by A. R. Bancroft '17, C. J. North '17, E. M. Knox and the remaining Yale runners.

Perfect weather with little wind on Saturday made conditions for running

the best possible. The Yale team got the jump at the start of the race and Fuller alone of the University team was among the leaders at the turn up the first fall. Overton and Young kept in the lead, but the other Yale runners were gradually passed by the first four of the University team. At the half-way mark the course led over West Rock, an elevation of over 400 feet. Going up this fall, the Crimson representatives as a rule fared as well as their opponents and all were forced to alternate between running and walking. The way down the farther side of the hill was exceedingly steep with steps a large part of the way. Over the good stretch from the bottom of the hill to the finish, there was little change in the order of the runners as the positions gained earlier in the race were generally held. Platt, however, was passed there by Babcock and Cook.

Freshmen Won Easily.

The Freshman cross-country team decisively defeated the Yale first-year men by the score of 17 to 46. Captain J. D. Hutchinson '19 won by a large margin in 20 minutes and 4-5 of a second. Three Harvard men followed, the first of whom was E. H. Kelton '19. H. E. Small '19 won third place after a close race with J. M. Greene '19. Tritch came in fifth, scoring first for Yale, and was followed by another Yale runner, but J. B. Hopkins '19 finished seventh, completing Harvard's score.
