SMITH HALLS EIGHTS WON SLOCUM TROPHY

Smith won both races over the mile course in the basin yesterday and gained possession of the Slocum Trophy. The third crews do not row until this afternoon but Smith could finish last and still come out on top in the final reckoning. The first race was started from the Cottage Farm Bridge at 4 o'clock, the crews rowing across the Charles River Basin to the Harvard Bridge. Smith and Gore rowed side by side during most of the race, but a hundred yards from the finish Smith spurted and managed to shoot over the line a bare quarter-length ahead. Standish finished far in the rear. Smith's time was 5.36 which is very good for the course, though a slight following wind aided the oarsmen.

The second race was largely a repetition of the first, Smith and Gore fighting all the way, the former pulling out a winner just at the end of the distance. Smith's time was 5.41.

The double victory places Smith's total at nine while Gore and Standish have four and two respectively. Today's race for the third crews will start at 4.30 and will be rowed up-stream over the half-mile straightaway course.

The race this afternoon closes the Freshman Interdormitory rowing season. The nine crews will now be disbanded and two Freshman crews will be formed. These will continue rowing until the week of the Princeton game when the final regatta marks the end of fall rowing.

Picked Crews Retained.

Coaches Herrick and Haines have chosen the following men to continue practice; from Smith: H. S. Chase, L. L. Emery, R. S. Emmet, R. B. Lane, G. D. Leighton, P. R. Meyer; from Gore: E. Billings, Jr., J. S. Coleman, G. G. Garceau, E. H. Gardiner, J. R. Parsons; from Standish: R. Cobb, R. F. Flynn, L. K. Garrison, R. E. Strawbridge, Jr., K. R. Whitmarsh, E. C. Whittemore.

More men are needed for the club crews. All candidates should report at Newell boathouse Monday at 4 o'clock.
