The news of the resignation of five Yale men from participation in intercollegiate athletics has come as a genuine shock to all Harvard undergraduates. It is well-known that few athletes have ever really read the rules relating to professionalism, and do not know the various technical ramifications upon which players may be disqualified. The facts of the case admit no doubt that the men who resigned were completely innocent of any real professionalism in spirit, and only ignorance of a technicality led them to the disqualifying act. It is no exaggeration to say that all Harvard men feel the deepest regret at the incident. Whether the University teams win or lose, it is the desire of all sportsmen that they meet opponents who have not lost a part of their strength,--especially through such a stroke of chance as this.
