CORNELL FIRST IN TWO RACES

UNIVERSITY AND 1917 CREWS NOSED OUT AFTER LEADING AT START.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Cornell crews defeated the University and Freshman crews in two close and hard-fought races in the Basin yesterday afternoon. After being held in the boathouses for two hours by a heavy wind, the university crews started at about quarter of seven o'clock. Harvard had the better of the start, and quickly opened a three-quarter length lead; then when the stroke settled to 40 a minute for Harvard and 36 for Cornell, the University crew held its advantage as far as the Harvard Bridge. There Cornell had begun to creep up and soon passed Harvard, although still rowing a lower stroke. Below the bridge both crews were greatly handicapped by the rough water. At the finish, the University crew made a short spurt, which partly cut down Cornell's lead, but crossed the line a length and a quarter behind the Ithacans. Cornell's time was 9 minuates, 38 seconds, and Harvard's 9 minutes, 42 seconds, very good considering the rough water in the last half of the race.

1917 Succumbs at Finish.

The Freshman crews started a few minutes after the first race had finished. Again Harvard had the jump at the start, although not so much as in the university race. The Cornell freshmen, however, soon overcame this lead, and down to the bridge the crews were neck and neck, Cornell rowing 32 strokes a minute and Harvard 36. Again Cornell drew away in the lower half of the Basin, finishing a length and three-quarters in the lead in 9 minutes, 56 seconds. The Harvard Freshmen finished in 10 minutes and 1 second.

The crews rowed as follows:

University crew--Stroke, Lund; 7, Curtis; 6, Parson; 5, Schall; 4, Harwood; 3, Soucy; 2, Talcott; bow, Captain Reynolds; cox., Sargent.

Cornell University Crew -- Stroke, Spansy; 7, O'Brien; 6, Bird; 5, Welles; 4, Gilman; 3, Eddy; 2, Duffle; bow, Ellms; cox., Rand.

Harvard Freshman Crew--Stroke, Captain Brown; 7, Cabot; 6, Stebbins; 5, Ely; 4, Lovell; 3, Potter; 2, Young; bow, Higinson; cox., Cameron.

Cornell Freshman crew.--Stroke, Collyer; 7, Lund; 6, Cushing; 5, Worn; 4, Overlock; 3, Meyer; 2, Stahl; bow, Morgan; cox., McCandless.

Mr. William Forbes refereed, and H. Philbin, of Yale, was the judge at the finish.
