VIRGINIA VALIANTLY DOWNED

THE THREE TALLIES OF UNIVERSITY GARNERED IN THE FIRST INNING.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harvard tallied its ninth victory of the season yesterday afternoon when the strong Virginia nine was defeated 3 to 2. The University team was fortunate in that Virginia did not start Calloway in the box, for after the relieved James in the second inning, Harvard was completely at his mercy.

The Crimson batsmen lost no time in making the game safe, for in the first inning they smashed out four hits sending three men across the rubber. Wingate began by singling over second, and later came home on successive hits by Clark and Ayres. Gannett then cleared the bases by a slashing double to centre going to third on the throw-in. Hardwick and Milholland, however, were unable to score him. Harvard never seriously threatened to score again, the nearest being when Wingate was caught at the plate trying to score from second on a single.

Fast work in the field kept the visitors from scoring in the fourth, although Hitchcock allowed three hits. Phillips dropped a Texas leaguer back of Wingate, but was caught stealing by Waterman's pretty throw. The next two hits were likewise wasted, White being forced at second.

The real trouble came in the eighth. Calloway was hit, advanced to second on Paschal's hit, continued to third when Phillips walked and scored on Neff's bounder. Paschal registered the second and last score on White's sacrifice.

Fielding features were supplied by Ayres and Neff, Virginia's shortstop. The former's brilliant play on Paschal's well placed bunt saved a run in the sixth, while Neff fielded his position excellently and cut off several seemingly sure hits.
