GOLF TEAM TRIALS BEGIN

Matches Scheduled for Today.--Freshmen Now Eligible in Other Than Collegiate Contests.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Trials for the University golf team begin at the Oakley Country Club this afternoon, and will extend until the spring vacation. The purpose of the preliminary trials is to select ten men who will be allowed the use of the Oakley course until June 1. The competition for the team will continue after the vacation amongst the ten men retained and those who are already members of the Oakley Club.

The pairings for the match play rounds at the Oakley Club this afternoon are as follows: At 2 o'clock--F. Sargent '14 vs. F. I. Amory '17; H. K. Caner '15 vs. F. C. Carleton '16; J. G. Heyburn '16 vs. P. W. Simsons '16; H. DeFord '15 vs. E. P. Allis '15, and G. A. McCook '16, vs. H. Goodspeed '16. At 3 o'clock--R. B. Southgate '15 vs. C. D. McDuffle '16, and G. N. Richard '14 vs. B. Duer '15. The result of all matches should be reported to the manager each evening before 6.30.

Each man competing in the trials will be required to pay a fee of $1 every afternoon he is paired for a match. This fee is payable at the first tee before the beginning of play. Because of the poor condition of the course, ground rules will be observed throughout the period of trials. Candidates will be allowed to "tee up" before every stroke either on the fair green or the putting green.

Freshmen Eligible.

At a meeting of the Athletic Committee yesterday evening it was voted to allow Freshmen to play in all matches against clubs but not against colleges. It will be possible, under this plan, to determine which men from 1917 will make valuable material for the Intercollegiate Tournament in the fall.
